So How Does the Miroco Light Therapy Lamp Work?

Miroco are a relatively new company – formed in 2013. Predominantly a manufacturer of kitchen based appliances they also branched into other home devices and have produced a number of light therapy lamps.

So let’s fire away:

The Miroco MI-CL003 Light Therapy lamp measures 6.3 x 1.57 x 7.87 inches and weighs just under 1lb.

It produces 10,000 lux of bright light when the device is four inches away from your eyes. It uses LED lights and is UV free. The light has a color temperature of 6,500K.

Diving in deeper:

Beneath the light you have a touch power button on the left. To the right of that you have the timer settings, touch the relevant time setting (they go in 10 minute increments from 10 minutes to 60 minutes) to set the duration of your light therapy session.

Then beneath the light on the right you have the brightness button – this has three different brightness settings. Press the power button to turn it on at the lowest setting, touch it again to move it up to medium, then once more to set it to the highest lux setting (10,000 lux). Touch it once more to turn it off.

It has a detachable and foldable stand – by adjusting the stand you can adjust the angle of the light. This can also be wall mounted

The Good

Let’s lay this bare:

Miroco have got the balance on the light here spot on. It is powerful enough to produce the required 10,000 lux but it isn’t overwhelming, so shouldn’t hurt your eyes.

That means you can easily spend more time in front of the light without feeling uncomfortable and it generally makes your light therapy session a much more pleasant experience.

On top of that:

You have three brightness settings you can quickly and easily switch between. If you are new to light therapy this means you can ease yourself in by starting on the lowest setting for a shorter period of time and then gradually increase the light intensity and the length of your light therapy sessions.

It doesn’t stop there either:

This has a really nifty timer feature. You can set the light to remain on for anything up to 60 minutes in ten minute intervals by simply pressing on the relevant time level on the front of the light.

Sit back and enjoy your light therapy session and each small light will turn off until your allotted time is up and then the light will turn off completely. Note, you don’t have to use the timer function if you want the light on indefinitely.

It is simple, but effective.

This has a detachable stand that has the dual benefits of:

  1. Letting you tilt the Miroco Light Therapy Lamp to various angles to make it easier for the field of light to hit your eyes.
  2. When you remove it/fold it back into the light, it makes it easier to store/move.

The stand is well designed and stable as well.

And that is another thing:

This thing is surprisingly small – it is similar in size to a large tablet and it takes up very little space.

As a result you can fit it almost anywhere – on your bedside table just after you have woken, on your kitchen counter as you have breakfast, on your cubicle desk at work, etc etc.

The flat design and extreme lightweight nature of the light means it takes up minimal space if you want to pack it when you go away somewhere.

News Flash:

Miroco have packed A LOT of power into a very small unit.

It is certainly nicely made as well – the stand is sturdy, the buttons are touch sensitive and work well and considering how small and light it is it is very sturdy.

To give you even more flexibility when you use it it can be wall mounted as well.

And it is also really easy to use. Two buttons – a power/timer button and a brightness button. Just plug it in and go.

One other thing that is often overlooked by manufacturers is the cord – this has a 58 inch power cord – long enough to reach pretty much any wall outlet without any strain.

Miroco Light Therapy Lamp

And the icing on the cake?

Considering the functionality you get and the quality of the light this is pretty darned cheap – it comes at a price it is very hard to argue about.

It is certainly easy to see why this has so many positive reviews online.

The Bad

There isn’t a huge amount not to like about this, but I do have one main gripe about this.

Ready?

You need to have this four inches away from you to get the full benefit of the 10,000 lux – I mean that is so close you will actually be able to feel the heat from your lamp on your skin!

Most SAD lamps I have tested require the lamp to be somewhere between 8 and 16 inches away from you to get 10,000 lux, so four inches is exceptionally close.

Of course the solution is to have it further away from you, but to use it for longer.

I was singing the praises of the long cord earlier, but…

Guess what?

It isn’t perfect – it is very slim and not that durable, as it is easy to snap/twist/break.

Also the plug itself could be made a better shape as it is difficult to get your fingers in/around it to remove it.

Aside from that:

The power button emits a VERY bright light, which means if you want this in your bedroom and are sensitive to light, you cannot leave it plugged in as the light is so bright it is like sleeping with a nightlight on.

Not a massive issue, as you can just unplug it overnight, unless your plug socket is in an awkward position of course…

Finally:

There is a distinct lack of proper directions in the instructions booklet. I like the way Circadian Optics set out their instructions, they are not extensive but simple and cover how to use the light and explain light therapy and how to get the most out of it.

The Beautiful

Miroco Light Therapy Lamp

It is sleek and simple. As I mentioned before it resembles a large tablet. It might not quite have the same aesthetical design as the Circadian Optics SAD lights, but being so slim it is pretty unobtrusive and fits into any decor.

It certainly isn’t unpleasant as some of the more bulky and clinical looking SAD lights are.

And Does It Work?

It certainly does and that probably goes a long way to explaining the hugely positive reviews and why it is always at the very top of the Amazon best sellers list.

Users report it leaving them feeling more awake and alert, with an improved mood, calmer and with a better regulated sleep pattern and that is just a snapshot of a lot of positive feedback.

SAD charity SADA have released figures showing that light therapy is effective in up to 85% of diagnosed cases of Seasonal Affective Disorder. This is backed up by study after study that show light therapy makes a difference to those suffering with SAD:

In short – the chances are it will make a difference for you!

My Verdict

Best seller for a reason!

This is a very popular choice and usually somewhere near the top of the best selling light therapy lamps list and it is easy to see why.

Small and light enough to be able to transport easily anywhere, yet still powerful enough to produce a light that makes a difference to your seasonal affective disorder without being too harsh on your eyes.

Little features like adjustable brightness settings, a smart timer option and a nice long power cord, all at a very affordable price means this is a great option for anyone.
